What is an AI Agent?

An agent is a piece of software that runs on your computer and can do three things: talk to an AI service, talk to you & use software tools to do things. Common tools allow agents to search the web and modify files on your computer. But tools can do anything software can do. Haume Made provides additional tools which allow agents to create and manage websites.

To use an agent you need two things: a subscription to an AI service (eg. ChatGPT or Claude) and the agent software installed on your computer and connected to your AI service.

Why PHP?

I know, I know … PHP is not cool. But it’s also over thirty years old, is extremely reliable, has an enormous ecosystem & powers nearly 70% of the websites on the internet.

More importantly, PHP has one feature which no other backend does. When files on the server are edited, the changes are immediately visible to clients (without a build step or restarting a daemon). This is required for some of Haume Made's features.

I’ve been experimenting with a JavaScript/TypeScript backend which I might be able to make work. If you want to use Haume Made but PHP is a deal breaker, let me know.

Why SQLite?

SQLite is one of the fastest and most reliable databases in the world. It’s in your phone, your laptop, your web browser & even powers the Airbus A350 flight software. It is also entirely contained within a single file and doesn’t require a daemon, which makes it very convenient for Haume Made.

But AI is bad, right?

Well … maybe. 😢 But so are monocultures, social media, pesticides, mobile phones, cars, alcohol, industrial farming, plastic, pharmaceuticals, roads, laptops, concrete & the internet. Like it or not this is the world we live in. I can’t think of an action I can take which will meaningfully change the rate of AI adoption in the world.

If AI is here to stay, I have a choice. Do I ignore it or do I try and use it to create the world I want? I believe small businesses are a fundamental good. They provide livelihoods and social cohesion in way that corporations don’t. They keep money in the local economy. They increase local resilience and provide meaningful jobs.

Small businesses often struggle with their website. Build a good website costs thousands of dollars, tens of thousands of dollars if you want to do something complicated. This is beyond the means of many small businesses and I hope Haume Made can help with that.

If you are concerned about AI data centres (and there are reasons to be concerned) the big companies are listening. It’s up to us to make sure they follow through and deliver on their promises.

I’m not a computer expert, can I build websites with Haume Made?

Yes! My wife built a website for the courses she teaches. A friend built a site for her counselling and coaching business.

You might need some help getting started, but your nerdy friend can probably sort you out. Once the tools are in place it’s very easy to use. Just talk to the agent like you would talk to a person.

Building websites is a skill. As you practice you’ll be able to build bigger and more complex projects. Have fun and experiment.

I’m a web developer, is AI going to take my job?

I don’t think so! There is value in understanding how the systems you are building work. Your skills allow you to talk to the agent in more precise terms, to work faster & to build more ambitious projects than people without domain expertise.

I built Haume Made because I wanted a better, faster way to build websites for clients (and myself). The clients I like working with often don’t have a lot of money and I was frustrated by how little I could do for them and still pay myself fairly. Haume Made allows me to build more ambitious projects for clients than I would have taken on before. <br><br>This is the most fun I’ve ever had building websites!
